Virgin vs. Reclaimed: Does It Matter?

As refrigerant is phased out of production and importation, virgin refrigerant is becoming harder to find and more expensive. Contractors don’t want to compromise service to their customers, so many ask:

Is it worth it?

In short, no. Here are three things contractors should know:

1. Reclaimed is not recycled. Reclaimed refrigerant is often confused with recycled refrigerant, but they are vastly different. Recycling simply reduces a refrigerant’s contaminants using oil separation and filtration processes. In fact, recycled refrigerant should only be used in the same piece of equipment from which it was recovered.

2. Reclamation entails filtering, drying, distillation, and chemical processes that strip the refrigerant of impurities. In order to achieve “reclaim” status, the EPA requires these refrigerants to meet ARI-700 purity standards – the same standards required of virgin refrigerants.

3. New (virgin) and reclaimed refrigerants are the exact same purity.
